PPC has applied biofilters & biofiltration to a variety of processes and industries including: fiberglass, matt, styrene butadiene rubber, corn processing, optic lens coating, x-ray film, can coating, animal food production, food flavor production, printing, tobacco production, oriented strand board, particle board, MDF and distillation.
Proven Technology
Biofiltration is a unique technology that provides significant economic benefits (operating cost) for select gas streams. Biofiltration accomplishes the same objective as an oxidizer (RTO - RCO - Catalytic). The biofilter oxidizes the pollutant to CO2 and H20. However, this oxidation occurs at ambient temperatures without consuming any natural gas. The pressure drop through the equipment is much lower than traditional RTO systems which also save on electrical power consumption. In today's environment of escalating energy cost and national awareness of natural resources, the biofilter provides distinct advantages for certain industrial exhaust. Biofilters are a "green" alternative to MACT and EPA Compliance.

Operation
In the first humidification stage, the water soluble VOC's are scrubbed from the vapor phase and into the recirculation water. Partial biological oxidation of the pollutants is achieved in the water phase. When the VOC's reach an equilibrium concentration in the recirculation water, they carryover into the second biofilter stage. This is an immobile, fixed film reactor that provides a tremendous amount of biomass surface area for the VOC's to contact and diffuse into. The filter media contains micro-organisms that have been acclimated to the chemical pollutants found in the process exhaust.
Advantages of Biofiltration
Biofiltration has many advantages over traditional VOC's and HAP destruction methods.
- VOC's
and HAP's are Oxidized
at Ambient Temperatures
- The low temperature
oxidation eliminates
the high costs associated
with combustion.
-
Intrinsically Safe
- The low temperature
oxidation and high moisture
content eliminate the
fears associated with
combustion.
- Low
Annual Operating Cost
- There are only two
major power consumers
in a biofiltration system:
a recirculation pump
for humidification and
a fan to pull the gas
stream through the equipment.
- Low
Pressure Drop
- Much lower pressure
drop than catalytic
or regenerative thermal
oxidizers resulting
in fan power consumption
savings.
- Proven
Effective Technology
- Biofiltration systems
are in place with historical
operating experience
demonstrating regulatory
compliance.
- Environmentally
Friendly - Zero
NOx emissions, Zero
SOx emissions and substantially
lower Carbon Dioxide
emissions.
- Low Maintenance - Very few moving parts result in lower maintenance cost.
